Various Artists – Future Massive Vol 1 / Future Massive

The debut release from Future Massive is a proper interstellar 8-track adventure through Acid, IDM and Electro, featuring tracks from some of my current favourites such as Rolando Simmons and Attraktta and boasting a brand spanking new track from FSOL’s Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans – under their Humanoid moniker.

Opening with the victorious arpeggiated electro of Plant 43’s ‘Ceilometer’ this release is a statement of intent, from a new label clearly focused on futurism and machine music. Hot on the heels of her LP for Craigie Knowes, Berlin-based Eluize follows with a snaking offbeat techno jam, aptly called ‘Amethystine’.

The funky acid of Rootsix’ ‘Bumble’ is a highlight for me, with the 303 bouncing over disco loops and fantasy island keys that wouldn’t sound out of place on a 90’s platform game. Continuing the computer theme, The Gasman pulls up the tempo for an 8-bit staccato funk wig-out titled ‘Teq800ex’. Label co-owner Attraktta is up next with the dreamy ‘Mothbox‘, a slow, anthemic metronomic ballad. This leads nicely into Rolando Simmons’ gorgeous Rephlex-esque ‘Volca Ballad’. ‘Fu*ck It’ hails Humanoid’s return, with a frantic unhinged aquatic rave banger that’s sure to melt faces. The release closes with a mad drum workout from Karsten Pflum which sounds like Drumfunk squeezed through a Braindance filter.

Fans of Rephlex and Drexciya rejoice!!!
